Summary
Aura Sul Wind project is an unprecedented pilot for floating offshore wind in the Southern Hemisphere, aimed at testing floating offshore wind technology in Southern Brazil. blueOASIS is providing acoustic and metocean monitoring, with the deployment of 2 HT-S systems in the study area, kicking off its presence in Brazil within a major initiative.
Introduction
The Aura Sul Wind project is an international research, technological development, and demonstration initiative aimed at advancing floating offshore wind energy in Brazil.
Coordinated by JB Energy, the project brings together public and private entities from Brazil, Japan, Portugal, and other countries, with the goal of supporting the implementation of Brazil’s first pilot on floating offshore wind power generation, 65 km offshore from Rio Grande, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The initiative aims to deploy one 18 MW-class wind turbine combined with the Raijin Float®, a concrete semi-submersible floating foundation. Beyond benchmarking several technological components, it is expected that considerable knowledge is generated to support a future commercial offshore wind deployment.
Given this opportunity, a collaboration has been implemented between blueOASIS, JB Energy and the University of Rio Grande (FURG), which is the main entity responsible for environmental monitoring in the project. This represents a milestone for our presence in this market on the southern hemisphere, and especially in Brazil, where this initial technology demonstration is expected to raise a lot of attention.
blueOASIS is providing two HT-S monitoring buoys, capable of measuring acoustic and environmental parameters relevant to offshore floating wind deployment. As a result of this initial collaborative trial, the company shall be granted a first right of refusal to provide environmental and acoustic monitoring services for a potential commercial-scale offshore wind development in the region.
